There’s a secret that the world doesn’t want you to know – and it’s found in the power of the first step.
When I first got married I thought there was no way I could ever be a mother. Then I thought there was no way I could ever be a mom of two, or buy a house, or grow a garden, or start a blog… Most of the things in my life that bring me the greatest joys are all things that seemed absolutely impossible. But once you start, life just kind of whisks you away and before you know it, you’ve done the impossible!
But believe it or not, there are actually steps to take before you take the first step towards that dream that’s too big to ever come true.
First: Start Defining The Dream
Since March my husband and I have been building a house that was going to be ours. It was beautiful with four bedrooms (so the baby wouldn’t be sleeping in the living room anymore!), two and a half baths, builtins everywhere, large master closet… It was the perfect house. But just last week we found out we were going to have to sell it, rather than move in. I was heart broken! And I felt like my dream had been crushed. I was directionless and downright grumpy.
But we set down and defined the dream. And we discovered, that the real dream involved a house that size on a little bit of land. Which, once we sold the house, we could afford to buy!
Moral of the story, you can’t take the first step until you have a clearly defined dream you’re stepping towards. As the Cheshire cat famously said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there”.
Second: Start with Something Easy
Once you have the dream firmly in place, figure out at least 3 “next steps” items you do know how to do. Are you wanting to sell your house? Probably need to meet with a realtor. Going back to school? Start researching colleges and apply for FAFSA. Potty training? Talk to LOTS of moms and get all their tips and tricks. There is always something small that you can do to take that first step.
Jim Rohn once said, “What’s the definition of easy? Something you can do!”
So start with something easy. Do what you can. Once you take that first little step, you’ll see what the next little step needs to be. And before you know it, you’ll have climbed the mountain that you thought was too big to ever tackle! Just like it takes a lot of effort to get a boulder rolling, but once it starts, you can let go and it’ll get to the bottom of the hill all by itself – so it is with our lives. It takes a lot of effort to take that first step. To write that first blog post or start cleaning that first dish in the sink. But once you start, it’s amazing how quickly things fall into place!
Third: Start NOW!
There are a lot of life principles that can be learned through baking (and maybe that’s why I’m not so good at baking!), but one that’s stuck with me is the pie in the oven. You can spend all day thinking about it, gathering the ingredients, etc. But the timer doesn’t start until you put it in the oven.
It is the same with just about everything in life. Everything worth having also has a timer attached to it. Do you want a child? You have to get pregnant. And once you’re pregnant that baby is coming, you just have to wait! Want to sell your house? You have to put it on market, then you wait. Every. Single. Thing in our lives has a timer attached to it. And until you start – that timer isn’t going to start ticking.
So even if you don’t know if you’ll make a good mom. Or if you can fit book club into your schedule. Or how you’re going to get back into shape. Start. We very rarely get to see the whole path beginning to end. 90% of the time we only get to see a couple feet ahead and have to go out on faith trusting that after we take those steps, we’ll see the next steps.
If you’ve been thinking about something in particular as you’ve been reading this post, please, put down the phone/computer and take the first step! There is so much we can do with our lives, but if we spend our days putting off the scary/difficult then when we look back we’ll realize we only achieved a fraction of what we could have.
You’ve got this girl!
